These are Alabamaâs 50 richest cities, according to Forbes
The median household income in Alabama is $54,943 — nearly $14,000 less than the national average — but in many communities across the state, the median income is far higher.
Forbes recently compiled a list of the “richest” cities or communities in each state, pulling extensive data from the Census Bureau’s 2021 American Community Survey 5-Year Estimates, including median household income, mean (or average) household income, median home value and median property taxes paid.
Analyzing that data, Forbes was able to list the top 50 riches cities in Alabama (although in some cases, the locations were not cities, but census-designated areas).
In all, 20 communities in Alabama have median household incomes in excess of $100,000.

The top six — and seven of the top 10 — on the list are all either suburbs of or considered part of the Birmingham metropolitan area, led by Mountain Brook.
Mountain Brook has a median household income of $150,268, a mean household income of $249,818, a median home value of $697,800, and median property taxes of $6,156.
It’s worth noting the property taxes for Mountain Brook is nearly three times the next highest in the state, which is Highland Lakes.
Other Birmingham suburbs, Vestavia Hills at #3, followed by Shoal Creek and Indian Springs Village, round out the top five.
